Ezri Konsa Steps Up for Arsenal as William Saliba Remains Sidelined

Arsenal's summer signing Ezri Konsa has seamlessly filled the void left by William Saliba's long-term back injury, helping the Gunners maintain the Premier League's best defensive record eight games into the season.

The 29-year-old centre-back, acquired from Aston Villa for £55 million in August, has started six of Arsenal's eight league matches and scored his first goal for the club in Saturday's win over Everton. Manager Mikel Arteta praised Konsa's adaptation as "unbelievable," highlighting his immediate chemistry with Gabriel Magalhães.

Impressive Statistics

Konsa leads the Premier League in pass-completion rate at 96% from 324 passes this season, mirroring his top ranking last term. He also ranks among the elite in ground-duel success. Arsenal have kept five clean sheets in eight games, with Konsa featuring in six of those matches.

Recruitment Strategy Pays Off

The signing initially raised questions given Arsenal's existing defensive depth, but the club's shift toward peak-age players appears vindicated. Konsa's 286 appearances for Villa included a Europa League triumph, and he started seven of England's eight World Cup matches. Former Villa teammate Morgan Rogers, now at Chelsea for £117 million, called him "one of the best centre-backs in football."

Partnership with Gabriel Flourishes

Both centre-backs scored against Everton, the first time Arsenal have had two centre-backs score in a Premier League match since February 2024. The duo have also started all three Champions League games together, with Arsenal unbeaten. Gabriel said Konsa made his "life easy" since arriving.

Saliba's Return Looms

Saliba continues individual training with no return date set. Arteta insists the team is "desperate to have him back" but acknowledges the luxury of depth, noting Konsa's versatility to play right-back as an additional option.
