UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava has informed the program that he intends to return for the 2027 season, his agent told CBS Sports. The decision comes after Iamaleava suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the Bruins' victory at Oregon on October 10.
Iamaleava's 2027 Decision
Iamaleava, a senior with one year of eligibility remaining under the NCAA's new five-for-five rule, was the No. 2-ranked quarterback prospect in the Class of 2023. After a pedestrian redshirt sophomore campaign under the previous coaching staff, he returned to play for new head coach Bob Chesney. His 2027 draft stock would have been complicated by the ACL recovery, making the pre-draft process difficult. Staying at UCLA allows him to rehabilitate within a Big Ten program's medical infrastructure and potentially improve his standing with NFL evaluators by demonstrating a full recovery. He could also secure another seven-figure NIL deal.
Dieffenbach's Rise
Cal Poly transfer Ty Dieffenbach, also a senior with an extra year of eligibility, has stepped into the starting role and led the No. 7 Bruins to wins over Wisconsin and Michigan State. He threw a critical fourth-quarter touchdown pass in the win over Oregon after Iamaleava's injury. One coach told CBS Sports' Aaron Taylor that Dieffenbach "can make some throws better than Nico did." The 7-0 Bruins face Nevada on Saturday.
UCLA could enter 2027 with both quarterbacks on the roster, though Dieffenbach may command Power Four starter-level compensation if his strong play continues. The situation highlights the importance of a quality backup in the Big Ten, as seen with Oregon's struggles after losing Dante Moore and Ohio State turning to true freshman Luke Fahey following an injury to Julian Sayin. Adding complexity, Iamaleava's younger brother Madden is also on the roster; Dieffenbach beat him out for the backup job. Whether Dieffenbach's performance positions him to challenge Iamaleava for the starting role in 2027 remains a storyline to watch.
