Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has declared he will continue wearing unauthorized cleats despite receiving a fine from the NFL, according to a report published Saturday.
The league penalized Williams for violating uniform and equipment rules during the Bears' game against the Detroit Lions on December 22, 2024, at Soldier Field. The specific nature of the cleats' violation was not detailed in the report.
Williams, who wears number 18, was photographed walking off the field after the second half of that contest. The rookie quarterback has not publicly commented on the specific design or branding that triggered the league's enforcement action.
The NFL maintains strict guidelines on player footwear, requiring cleats to meet approved color schemes and branding standards. Players who violate these rules are subject to fines that escalate with repeat offenses.
Williams' stance suggests he is willing to absorb further financial penalties rather than comply with the league's equipment mandate. The Bears' next game will test whether he follows through on that intention.
