A hypothetical scenario in the SEC could see nine teams finish the regular season with identical 9-3 records, potentially throwing the College Football Playoff selection process into unprecedented chaos. The scenario, which remains mathematically possible entering Week 9, would require 31 specific game outcomes to align perfectly over the final five weeks.
Nine Teams, One Record
The nine teams and the conference records they would need to achieve 9-3 are: Alabama (6-2), Florida (5-2), Georgia (6-1), Kentucky (7-1), LSU (6-2), Missouri (5-2), Ole Miss (6-2), Tennessee (6-2), and Texas (5-2). Each team's path involves a specific set of wins and losses; for example, Alabama would need to beat Vanderbilt, Chattanooga, and Auburn while losing to LSU, while Texas would need to beat Mississippi State, Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas A&M while losing to LSU. South Carolina (4-3) was not included because a Gamecocks win-out would alter the math for Georgia and Missouri.
CFP Committee Challenges
Should this scenario materialize, the CFP Selection Committee would face a complex evaluation of top-25 wins, head-to-head results, schedule strength, and other metrics. Currently, Texas holds the strongest resume among SEC teams with three wins over ranked opponents and the conference's second-highest strength of schedule. The new strength-of-conference metric, to be applied in coming weeks, could elevate any 10-2 SEC finisher above at-large candidates from other conferences. However, a cluster of 9-3 teams would create a dicey situation for playoff inclusion, especially against teams from the Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC with more overall victories.
Analysts suggest that 10 wins may be the magic number for SEC teams to secure a playoff berth this season, making the nine-win cluster a precarious position for at-large consideration.
