Former Peterborough United and Hull City striker Aaron McLean delivered his five takeaways from Saturday's action across the Championship, League One and League Two.
Middlesbrough's Lankshear continues prolific form
Will Lankshear scored twice in Middlesbrough's 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic, taking his tally to 13 goals in 13 league games since his £20m summer move from Tottenham. Boro sit two points clear at the top of the Championship. McLean believes promotion is essential to keep Lankshear, warning that continued form will attract bigger clubs. He feels an England call-up is premature and that Lankshear should focus on finishing top scorer and reaching the Premier League first.
West Ham's London Stadium woes deepen
West Ham lost 3-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion, their third Championship defeat of the season – all at the London Stadium. McLean says the Hammers are not handling the pressure of playing in front of 60,000 fans, with the fanbase split over manager Nuno Espirito Santo. He notes opponents are enjoying trips to the stadium, which should be a fortress, and the early-goal concession pattern must be fixed.
Southampton vindicated in keeping Eckert
Southampton thrashed QPR 4-1 at St Mary's to move fifth in the Championship, having overturned a four-point deduction. McLean praises the decision to retain manager Tonda Eckert after last season's 'Spygate' controversy, highlighting the siege mentality driving the squad. James Ward-Prowse and James Bree are back to their best, and the team's consistency contrasts with West Ham's struggles.
Luton Town's promotion credentials tested
Luton Town won 2-0 at Peterborough United for a fourth straight League One victory, rising to fourth under Jack Wilshere. McLean questions whether they are genuine top-two contenders, citing a need for greater consistency compared to Huddersfield, Stockport and Bradford. Promotion is a must for the Hatters, and a sustained run could break them into the leading pack.
Fleetwood back cup magic with league win
After a stunning Carabao Cup penalty shootout win over Arsenal, Fleetwood Town beat Bristol Rovers 3-1 in League Two, with Aaron Loupalo-Bi scoring. McLean stresses the importance of maintaining league form ahead of six fixtures before a quarter-final against Everton. The Cod Army's belief is high after the Arsenal upset, and another home draw in the cup gives them another chance.
