Pope Leo has informed the Villanova and Notre Dame basketball teams that he remains neutral between the two programs, according to an Associated Press report. The statement comes as both university teams maintain historic connections to Catholic institutions in the United States.
However, a figure identified as Prevost reportedly holds a different view on the matter, suggesting a divergence of opinion within the Vatican's engagement with American college athletics. The details of Prevost's position were not specified in the initial report.
Villanova University, operated by the Order of Saint Augustine, and the University of Notre Dame, founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross, both field prominent NCAA Division I men's basketball programs with strong Catholic identities.
