College Football Anxiety Rankings Week 9: Ohio State Backup QB Era Begins vs USC

College Football Anxiety Rankings Week 9: Ohio State Backup QB Era Begins vs USC
World Sports · 11:04:18 - Wednesday, 4 November 2026

College football's Week 9 brings heightened anxiety for several programs, as CBS Sports identifies the five most nervous spots in the country. The rankings highlight teams facing critical games with playoff implications, coaching pressure, or fragile undefeated records.

1. Anxiety Bowl – Ohio State at USC

Ohio State enters a crucial stretch without starting quarterback Julian Sayin, who was injured in the win over Indiana. A first-time starter must navigate a schedule that still includes USC, Oregon, Northwestern, Nebraska, and Michigan. A loss at USC would severely damage playoff hopes, especially with the expanded 24-team format making byes more valuable.

2. Georgia vs Florida

After an upset loss to Auburn, Georgia faces a volatile Florida team that has beaten Ole Miss by 24, lost to Missouri by 28, lost to South Carolina by 19, and beaten Texas in Austin. Gators offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, a former Georgia Tech assistant, knows how to challenge the Bulldogs' defense. Another loss would drop Georgia to 6-2 ahead of a road trip to Ole Miss.

3. Nebraska under Matt Rhule

Nebraska has started 5-0 in three consecutive seasons only to finish 7-6 (2024), 7-6 (2025), and now 5-2 after close losses to Indiana and Oregon. The Cornhuskers host a Washington team revitalized by quarterback Elijah Brown. A third straight loss to fall to 5-3 could test fan patience despite Rhule's recent contract extension.

4. Utah fans

Utah remains undefeated but has survived close calls against Kansas, Colorado, and Houston. The Utes now travel to face a Cincinnati team that just beat Texas Tech, with the Holy War against BYU and a road game at Arizona looming. As a Big 12 team, a road loss as a favorite could drop Utah onto the playoff bubble.

5. Anxiety Bowl II – Clemson at Florida State

Both fan bases appear numb after disappointing seasons, but coaches Dabo Swinney and Mike Norvell face pressure. A loss for Clemson to a struggling Florida State team could intensify calls for Swinney's ouster, while a loss for Norvell might finally end his tenure after the 2023 playoff snub still resonates.
