Cowboys' Trade for Joey Porter Jr. Pays Off as Cornerback Leads NFL in Coverage Metrics

The Dallas Cowboys acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a late-night trade between September 30 and October 1, sending a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick to Pittsburgh after contract talks stalled. The move came after a 1-2 start to the 2026 season, and Porter Jr. has immediately transformed the Cowboys' pass defense.

In three games with Dallas, Porter Jr. ranks first among 254 qualifying defenders in completion percentage allowed (18.2%), passing yards allowed (10), and yards per attempt allowed (0.9). His passer rating against as primary defender stands at 39.6, 10th in the NFL. He did not allow a single target in his debut against the Houston Texans, missed Week 5 with a stomach bug, then held Green Bay Packers receivers Christian Watson and Matthew Golden without a catch on five targets in Week 6. Against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7, he surrendered two catches for a total of 10 yards.

"I love it when we have a player like that who you can just throw on anybody's top guy," said wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Porter Jr. himself is fixated on the two completions allowed: "Two little 5-yard outs or whatever. I was pissed about it. As a DB, you never want to give up anything."

Defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who has coached All-Pro corners Pat Surtain II and Quinyon Mitchell, emphasized the mental challenge ahead: "You have to stay aggressive, you have to stay dominant, your technique has to be perfect every play." Porter Jr. embraces the challenge: "I enjoy when I get games where they try me... it's kind of fun to show off your talents."

The impact extends beyond Porter Jr.'s individual stats. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams has recorded seven of his nine tackles for loss since Porter Jr.'s arrival, and the Cowboys have held opponents under 24 points in three consecutive games — a feat not achieved in the previous two seasons. "He's a baller. He brought energy. He brought swag," Williams said.

With the schematic adjustment period over, Porter Jr. could improve further. For the cost of what amounts to a third-round pick, general manager Jerry Jones has secured an All-Pro-caliber No. 1 cornerback, making the Cowboys the clear winners of the 2026 NFL trade deadline weeks before the November 10 cutoff.
