No. 1 Florida opened the 2026-27 college basketball season with a statement victory on Monday, defeating No. 14 Miami 77-67 at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa. Senior forward Thomas Haugh, a national player of the year candidate who returned for his final season, led the Gators with 19 points and 10 rebounds while hitting four of eight 3-point attempts.

Haugh's Player of the Year Campaign Begins

Haugh matched the best 3-point shooting night of his career, previously achieved in the 2025 Elite Eight against Texas Tech during Florida's national championship run. The versatile forward also contributed across the board, prompting coach Todd Golden to praise the team's competitive and smart play. "I thought we did a great job. Really proud of my team. We competed the right way," Golden said.

Returning Core Seeks Second Title in Three Years

Seven months after a shocking second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Iowa in the same arena, Florida returned its core including Haugh, Rueben Chinyelu, Alex Condon, Boogie Fland, Urban Klavžar, and Denzel Aberdeen, who regained a fifth year of eligibility. Chinyelu expressed confidence before the season, stating the Gators would win another title. If the opener is any indication, that goal appears realistic.

Florida's Frontline Overwhelms Miami

The trio of Haugh, Chinyelu, and Condon dominated the interior, wearing down Miami's frontcourt of Henderson, Caleb Gaskins, and Malik Reneau. Even when Florida went small with Klavžar off the bench, the Gators controlled the glass and protected the rim, making them a formidable opponent.

Acaden Lewis Emerges for Miami

Despite the loss, Miami guard Acaden Lewis impressed with a game-high 24 points, showcasing shotmaking and poise running the offense. The Villanova transfer looks poised for a breakout sophomore season under coach Jai Lucas. The Hurricanes face a favorable nonconference schedule ahead, with games against Alabama and Texas before ACC play begins.
