The Milwaukee Brewers have declined their option on catcher Gary Sanchez, the former New York Yankees All-Star, shortly after the conclusion of the World Series. Sanchez, who earned two All-Star selections during his tenure with the Yankees, joined the Brewers organization but will now become a free agent.
The 31-year-old backstop posted a .218 batting average with 19 home runs and 47 RBIs in 111 games for Milwaukee during the 2026 regular season. His defensive metrics behind the plate remained solid, though his offensive production dipped from his peak years in New York.
Sanchez originally signed a one-year contract with the Brewers that included a club option for 2027. The decision to decline that option makes him one of the more notable catching options available on the open market this offseason.
