The NFC North delivered a commanding Week 8, strengthening its case to become the first division since the 2002 realignment to send four teams to the playoffs.
The Packers opened the week with a win over the Panthers, the Lions upset the previously unbeaten Vikings, and the Bears throttled the reigning champion Seahawks. Collectively, the division is 22-8 through eight weeks, the best mark in the NFL this season and the third-best by any division since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Against non-division opponents, the NFC North is 17-3, the best such record since 1970 excluding the strike-shortened 1982 season.
Even the last-place Packers (5-3) hold a better record than every team in the NFC East and NFC South and three of four in the NFC West, marking the best record for a division cellar-dweller through eight weeks since the merger.
Playoff Projections
According to SportsLine projections, the Vikings (6-1) have an 88% chance to make the playoffs, the Bears (6-2) 87%, the Lions (5-2) 83%, and the Packers (5-3) 56%. Multiplying those probabilities yields roughly a 36% chance that all four qualify — a historically high figure.
Historical Context
Before the 2002 realignment, only three divisions produced four playoff teams in a season (1998 AFC East, 1997 and 1994 NFC Central). None yielded a Super Bowl winner, and only the 1997 Packers reached the Super Bowl. Since the playoff expansion to seven teams per conference in 2020, seven divisions have sent three teams, but each had a clear weak link. The 2023 AFC North came closest, with all four teams posting winning records yet the 9-8 Bengals missing out as the eighth seed.
Challenges Ahead
The Packers' historically poor rushing attack (60.6 yards per game, on pace for the worst since the merger) and the Vikings' offensive struggles remain concerns. The Lions' defensive improvement and the Bears' secondary issues also bear watching. Meanwhile, the NFC East and NFC South appear to be one-bid divisions, and the NFC West has disappointed with the Rams and Seahawks both 4-4. Seattle currently holds a 58% playoff probability, just ahead of Green Bay, but faces a favorable upcoming schedule against the Cardinals, Raiders, Cowboys, and Giants. The Rams are also set to welcome back Myles Garrett.
The NFC North's depth and the conference's overall thinness give the division a slight edge to achieve the unprecedented four-team playoff berth, though the margin remains razor-thin.
