Major League Baseball has proposed delaying the implementation of a salary cap and floor until the 2028 season, a move designed to allow free agency to proceed before a potential lockout.
The league is attempting to encourage free-agent deals to be finalized before December 1, according to reports. The proposal would push back the introduction of a salary cap and floor, which are mechanisms to regulate team spending and promote competitive balance.
By delaying the new financial structure, MLB hopes to create a window for player movement without immediate constraints while broader labor negotiations continue. The players' association has not yet publicly responded to the proposal.
Further discussions are expected as both sides work toward a new collective bargaining agreement to avoid a work stoppage.
