Esteban Ocon's Formula 1 career faces an uncertain future after Haas terminated his contract for the remainder of the 2026 season following a dispute with team principal Ayao Komatsu during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. The 30-year-old Frenchman, who has started 198 grands prix since his 2016 debut, was already set to leave Haas at year's end with limited prospects for a 2027 seat.
Falling out in Mexico
The immediate catalyst came during Friday practice when Ocon objected over team radio to engineer Laura Mueller's call to switch his race-simulation run from soft to medium tyres. The disagreement escalated into a confrontation with Komatsu, leading to Ocon's removal from the weekend on Saturday morning. Ocon later stated on social media that "a difference in viewpoints led to a discussion" but categorically denied reports from French newspaper L'Equipe suggesting the meeting "ended abruptly, perhaps even physically." Haas confirmed on Tuesday that Ocon would not drive for the team again.
Pattern of team conflicts
Ocon's tenure at Haas mirrored previous difficulties. He was outperformed by teammate Oliver Bearman across two seasons, just as he had been by Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso at Alpine and Daniel Ricciardo at Renault. The team grew frustrated with what they saw as a recurring pattern: when struggling, Ocon became defensive, blamed the car, and showed a lack of accountability. Clashes with Bearman included a practice incident in Monaco and a collision at the 2024 British Grand Prix.
Mercedes connection and sole victory
Managed by Mercedes since his junior career, Ocon served as their reserve driver in 2019 after losing his Force India seat to Lance Stroll. Team principal Toto Wolff considered pairing him with Lewis Hamilton but feared a character clash, opting to retain Valtteri Bottas. Mercedes later backed Ocon's return to the grid with Renault in 2020. His only career win came at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix for Alpine, a race heavily influenced by a wet-start pile-up, a red flag, and Fernando Alonso's defensive driving that held up Hamilton in the closing laps.
Uncertain path forward
With a new generation led by drivers like newly crowned champion Kimi Antonelli emerging, Ocon now faces a year on the sidelines. He aims to secure a reserve driver role to rebuild his reputation, but a return to a race seat appears increasingly difficult given his history of team disputes and consistent deficit to teammates.
