Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy has apologized to New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman after a hot-mic comment about first baseman Jake Bauers went viral. The incident occurred during the Brewers' World Series celebration when Murphy was caught telling Bauers, who is heading into free agency after a career year, "You're gonna be a rich f---er, but just remember when you were on that horseshit Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself."
Murphy's Explanation and Apology
Murphy told the New York Post's "The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman" that he called Cashman immediately after the comment surfaced. "I picked up a phone and called Brian right away, and had a good conversation," Murphy said. He clarified that his remark was not aimed at the current Yankees roster but rather a longstanding joke between him and Bauers about teams with many high-paid, long-contract players sometimes struggling to play cohesively. Murphy used the Yankees as a reference because Bauers played for them in 2023 when they went 82-80 and missed the playoffs.
"After every celebration, I'd shake his hand. I'd say, 'You rich so-and-so, you're going to leave us,'" Murphy explained. "We're not going to be able to pay you. You're going to leave us and you're going to forget all about how we did things. … I would just give him this rhetoric every time." He added that he regrets the comment becoming public but emphasized it was part of their private humor.
Bauers earned $2.7 million last season, double his previous high, and is in line for a significant payday in free agency. The episode appears to be a minor offseason story, with neither Cashman nor Bauers publicly taking offense.
