LIV Golf Shuts Down After Five Years as Saudi Funding Ends

LIV Golf is officially shutting down after five years, with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) pulling all funding after the 2026 season. The league, which spent more than $5 billion attempting to disrupt professional golf, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and failed to secure a new backer for a planned "LIV Golf 2.0" relaunch. On Wednesday, BC Partners withdrew a planned $300 million investment after the league could not retain enough top players, and on Thursday LIV Golf confirmed a "wind-down of its operations" at a New Jersey bankruptcy court hearing.

The closure leaves several high-profile players facing uncertain futures. Brooks Koepka has already accepted a PGA Tour return offer that includes a $5 million charitable donation, a five-year ban from the Player Equity Program, and no FedEx Cup payouts in his first year back. Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau declined the same offer; Rahm has reportedly worked out an exit deal and plans to pursue a DP World Tour path, while DeChambeau's next steps remain unclear given his past antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour and strained relations with Tour leadership. Other LIV players such as Tyrrell Hatton, Joaquin Niemann, and Tom McKibbin may also seek returns via the DP World Tour or PGA Tour qualifying routes, but many lack guaranteed status and face a more difficult path under the PGA Tour's upcoming two-tier Championship Series and Challenger Series structure starting in 2028.

LIV Golf's legacy is mixed. While it failed to build a sustainable rival league or attract a broad television audience, its massive purses forced the PGA Tour to create signature events, increase prize money, and restructure its schedule. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp acknowledged that competition from LIV "did the professional golf world a favor" by pushing the Tour to innovate. However, the league's team concept, 54-hole shotgun-start format, and party atmosphere never resonated with most fans, and it ultimately ends as an expensive experiment that reshaped the sport's business landscape without establishing a lasting foothold.
