San Francisco 49ers rookie defensive tackle Gracen Halton has lost his starting position but gained a valuable mentor in veteran All-Pro DeForest Buckner, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.
Halton, who made an impression in the preseason, was seen stuffing Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane on a run attempt during a Sept. 20 game at Levi's Stadium. Despite the strong play, the coaching staff has opted to move the rookie to a reserve role.
The development comes with a silver lining: Buckner, a four-time Pro Bowler and one of the league's premier interior defenders, has taken Halton under his wing. The veteran's guidance is expected to accelerate Halton's development as he adjusts to the speed and complexity of the NFL.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen have emphasized the importance of veteran leadership for young linemen. Buckner's willingness to mentor Halton reflects the 49ers' culture of player development along the defensive front.
