Nigerian athlete Rukayat Taiwo Suleimon made history in April by becoming the first female blind sambist in the world to win a gold medal at a major international tournament, according to BBC Sport Africa.
The achievement marks a milestone for African para-sports. Suleimon, who lost her sight earlier in life, has been competing in sambo, a martial art and combat sport. Her victory was reported by Isaiah Akinremi for BBC Sport Africa from Lagos on November 6, 2026.
