Jerry Jones Rules Out Midseason Firing of Brian Schottenheimer After Cowboys' Collapse vs Cardinals

Jerry Jones Rules Out Midseason Firing of Brian Schottenheimer After Cowboys' Collapse vs Cardinals
Other Sports · 22:25:28 - Sunday, 8 November 2026

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dismissed the possibility of firing head coach Brian Schottenheimer midseason following the team's stunning 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals at AT&T Stadium on Sunday. The Cowboys (3-5) squandered a 14-point lead twice, including a 24-10 advantage with 14:20 remaining, marking the first time in franchise history Dallas lost at home when leading by 14 or more points in the fourth quarter. Previously, the Cowboys were 202-0-1 in such situations, including playoffs.

Jones Stands by Schottenheimer

When asked about a potential coaching change, Jones said: "Yeah, we're not going to get into anything. That's not in my mind at this time. But the main thing that's in my mind is we tee it up for those kinds of spots to win it... None of us are getting it done, and that should be my concern. So I'm not pointing at Schotty. I'm not pointing to anybody, but none of us have it done." Jones noted he has made only one in-season coaching change in 38 years of ownership — firing Wade Phillips in 2010 — and added, "I don't see that here."

Prescott Defends Collective Accountability

Quarterback Dak Prescott echoed the sentiment of shared responsibility: "It's all of us. Don't put the blame on one person. Simple as that. I think that's weak. I think that's cowardice. This game is about all 11 that touch the field and every person that has a part in it coaches and support staff. It's never just one person's fault."

Schottenheimer Takes Ownership

Schottenheimer acknowledged his role but highlighted positive takeaways: "I'm going to always own my part of this as a head football coach. It starts with me and there's certainly things that I need to do better. But as a football team in all three phases, I can point out three, four, five, six plays... a lot of football left."

Defensive Struggles Continue

The Cowboys defense allowed 20 or more points for the 15th consecutive game, the longest active streak in the NFL. Cardinals backup quarterback Gardner Minshew became the first player this season with at least three passing touchdowns in a fourth quarter. Running back Tyler Allgeier totaled 191 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns, including a career-high 147 rushing yards on 11 carries with runs of 63 and 52 yards — the first player in 2026 with multiple 50-yard runs in a game.

Dallas falls to 10-14-1 under Schottenheimer and has yet to string together a winning streak in 2026.
