The Oklahoma City Thunder announced that Chet Holmgren will miss 8-10 weeks due to a small patellar tendon tear in his right knee. This compounds the losses of Jalen Williams, who is out for the season, and Cason Wallace, who will miss most of the season after shoulder surgery, leaving the team without three of its top six players less than a month into the campaign.
The Thunder opened 4-1 but suffered a lopsided defeat to the Dallas Mavericks without Holmgren, underscoring the difficulty ahead. Coach Mark Daigneault must reconfigure lineups across the board. Rookie center Aday Mara, a 7-foot-3 product from Michigan, is thrust into a larger role. Mara impressed in his debut against Victor Wembanyama and posted his first double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 20 minutes against the Phoenix Suns, though he struggled in extended minutes against the Mavericks.
Offensively, Mara operates primarily as a finisher at the rim: 80% of his field-goal attempts have come within four feet and 75% off zero dribbles. Defensively, he offers needed rim protection with seven blocks in five games, but foul trouble has emerged — nine fouls in his two games with 20-plus minutes. The Thunder will rely on his development over the next two months as they navigate a season they initially viewed as a championship contender.
Trade speculation has intensified with Williams and Wallace sidelined. Any deal would likely wait until December 15, when summer signings become trade-eligible. General manager Sam Presti may prefer to evaluate the roster until Holmgren's expected January return before deciding on a move before the trade deadline.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's MVP candidacy gains intrigue amid the injuries. No player has won three consecutive MVPs since Larry Bird in the 1980s. Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 26.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists on 45.9/26.5/87.5 shooting splits. If he elevates his play and carries a depleted Thunder squad to a top-four seed in the West, he could break the drought and force a front-office push for reinforcements.
