Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli will miss Thursday's media day at the Mexico City Grand Prix due to a viral illness, the team announced. The FIA excused the Italian from his duties as a precaution to allow him rest ahead of the weekend. A Mercedes spokesperson said they expect Antonelli to return on Friday when practice begins at 18:30 GMT.
Antonelli leads the drivers' championship by 123 points over team-mate George Russell and stands on the brink of securing his first world title. He will clinch the championship on Sunday provided he does not lose more than two points to Russell and one point to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. Ninth place would be enough if Russell wins, and tenth if Hamilton wins.
Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas also missed media day due to illness, with his team describing it as a precautionary measure that does not currently affect his participation. Meanwhile, Cadillac announced a new contract for Sergio Perez until at least 2029, while reserve driver Colton Herta will take part in Friday practice as the team evaluates him for a potential 2027 seat alongside Perez.
Russell, who has won three races this season compared to Antonelli's nine, said his focus is on understanding his fluctuating form. He expressed confidence in rediscovering consistency, stating he has "lost no faith" in his ability.
