Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka and striker Breel Embolo have been cleared to return to the national team for next month's Nations League fixtures, the Swiss Football Association (SFV) announced on Tuesday.

Both players were suspended after admitting to obtaining forged Covid-19 vaccination certificates. Xhaka, 34, missed the October internationals against Scotland, North Macedonia and Slovenia, while Embolo, 29, was dropped from the squad in September.

SFV decision

National team director Pierluigi Tami said the decision considered the specific circumstances, concluded legal proceedings and the sporting consequences already served. "We are convinced that a return to the national team in November is responsible and the right thing to do," Tami stated.

Xhaka and Embolo were each fined 150,000 Swiss francs (approximately £136,000) and received a two-year suspended sentence provided no further offences are committed. Xhaka retains the captaincy for now, though the final decision rests with coach Murat Yakin, who will name his squad on 5 November.

Switzerland currently top Group E and face Slovenia on 13 November and Scotland on 16 November in their final Nations League group matches.
