USA TODAY NETWORK published an explainer article by Damon C. Williams detailing the NBA Cup, the league's in-season tournament competition. The NBA Cup, introduced in the 2023-24 season, features all 30 NBA teams competing in group play followed by knockout rounds, with the championship game held at a neutral site.
The tournament structure includes group stage games counting toward regular-season standings, with group winners and wild-card teams advancing to single-elimination quarterfinals and semifinals. The final is played at a predetermined neutral venue, with players on the winning team receiving a financial bonus.
