Five Potential Candidates to Replace Dan Quinn as Washington Commanders Head Coach in 2027

After a strong 2024 season, the Washington Commanders are on pace for a second consecutive year with five or fewer wins under head coach Dan Quinn, prompting speculation about a future coaching change. General manager Adam Peters may need to make a move to preserve his own position. Here are five candidates who could be considered for the role in 2027.

Brian Flores, Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator

Flores, currently facing a class-action lawsuit against the NFL, could find a willing employer in the Commanders' ownership group. He has revitalized Minnesota's defense in two years and previously exceeded expectations with the Miami Dolphins. Flores would inherit a franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels but would need to prove he can build a competent offensive staff.

Declan Doyle, Baltimore Ravens Offensive Coordinator

With Daniels showing dual-threat ability, an offensive-minded coach like Doyle could be attractive. The 30-year-old, in his first play-calling role, has designed an offense ranking sixth in yards per play (5.9) and eighth in EPA per play (0.071) despite Lamar Jackson missing games. His experience with rushing offenses and screens could mesh well with Daniels' skill set.

Anthony Campanile, Jacksonville Jaguars Defensive Coordinator

Campanile has transformed a bottom-10 defense into a unit ranking eighth in success rate (42.5%) and fifth in EPA per play (-0.063). His background as a linebackers coach could aid the development of young players like Sonny Styles. He earned head-coaching consideration in the previous offseason.

Drew Petzing, Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator

Petzing was on Washington's radar during the last coaching search. Under his guidance, Detroit's red-zone touchdown rate rose from 62.5% to 70.4%, and the offense ranks third in yards per drive (37.5) and points per drive (2.92). His NFL experience across multiple teams provides connections to assemble a staff.

Sean McDermott, Former Buffalo Bills Head Coach

McDermott, who led Buffalo to seven straight double-digit-win seasons and playoff victories, would bring stability. His track record with offensive coordinators like Brian Daboll and Joe Brady is strong. With Daniels at quarterback, McDermott could make the Commanders perennial NFC East contenders.
