After the first full round of 11 matches in the Scottish Premiership, the league table offers early clues about the season's trajectory. In two of the last three campaigns, the top six at this stage remained there until May.
Three-Way Title Race Unlikely
Hearts, under new manager Wouter Vrancken, sit third, eight points behind Celtic and four behind Rangers despite a summer rebuild and a playing style described as "organised chaos". They have scored the second-most goals in the league and are unbeaten at Tynecastle since April 2025, a run of 26 games. However, a 7-1 loss at Celtic Park and a growing injury list, combined with European commitments, suggest they may struggle to keep pace with the Old Firm. Celtic and Rangers lead key performance metrics such as expected goals, shots on target, and chances created, and both concede fewer than one goal per game on average. Rangers, without European football this season, could be better rested for domestic duty.
Kilmarnock Struggle at Bottom
Kilmarnock sit bottom, level on points with Hibernian and one behind Motherwell, but are bookmakers' favourites for automatic relegation. They have conceded 26 goals in 11 matches, the worst defensive record at this stage since Dundee in 2018-19, who were relegated. In the past decade, only twice has the team with the worst defence avoided finishing last, and both were rescued by strong attacking returns. Kilmarnock currently share the fewest goals scored in the league, making their defensive frailties hard to offset.
Top-Six Battle Wide Open
Only six points separate fourth-placed Dundee from ninth-placed Aberdeen, while the bottom three are within striking distance of the top half. Expected-points models highlight Hibernian and Motherwell as the biggest underperformers, potentially due to poor shot conversion, while Dundee and Falkirk have overperformed. The tight margins suggest a fierce contest for top-half places, with the battle for survival equally intense.
