Australian golfer Karl Vilips carded a 10-under-par 62 on Thursday to seize the first-round lead at the Mexico Open in Vallarta. The 23-year-old's bogey-free round gave him a one-stroke advantage over a group of challengers at the PGA Tour event.
Vilips, who earned his tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour, made nine birdies and an eagle on the par-5 11th hole at Vidanta Vallarta. His 62 matched the course record and marked the lowest opening round of his PGA Tour career.
The Mexico Open, part of the PGA Tour's fall schedule, continues through Sunday with a 36-hole cut after Friday's second round.
