Aston Villa have threatened legal action against former Liverpool defender and television pundit Jamie Carragher over comments he made regarding the club, according to reports on Saturday.
The Premier League club is understood to have sent a formal letter to Carragher demanding a retraction and apology for remarks the 48-year-old made during his media work. Specific details of the comments that prompted the threat have not been publicly disclosed.
Carragher, who spent his entire 17-year playing career at Liverpool and won two FA Cups, three League Cups, and the UEFA Champions League in 2005, has worked as a pundit for Sky Sports since retiring in 2013. He was photographed at Anfield on October 11 ahead of Liverpool's match against Manchester City.
Aston Villa, currently managed by Unai Emery, have not issued an official public statement on the matter. Carragher has not yet responded publicly to the legal threat.
The development adds to a growing trend of clubs taking formal action against media figures over commentary they deem defamatory or inaccurate.
