Oklahoma Offense Stalls Again as Loss to South Carolina Forces Tough Decisions for Brent Venables

Oklahoma's 42-25 loss to South Carolina underscored ongoing offensive woes, leaving head coach Brent Venables facing critical decisions about the program's offensive identity.

The Sooners fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the SEC, with the offense ranking last in the conference in total and rushing offense entering the game. Quarterback John Mateer completed just 7 of 12 passes for 25 yards in the first half, and Oklahoma had more penalty yards than offensive yards at intermission.

Since a win over Texas in early October, Oklahoma's offensive production has regressed. The unit's three-and-out rate of 34.1% ranks 120th nationally, per TruMedia. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, hired after the 2024 season, brought Mateer from Washington State, but the return on investment has diminished.

Historical context: last season, Oklahoma reached the College Football Playoff despite offensive inconsistencies, relying on a stingy defense. Over four games in November, 25 of 47 possessions ended in punts, five in turnovers, and only two touchdown drives spanned five or more plays.

Against South Carolina, the Sooners scored three points over their first eight possessions before a fourth-quarter flurry against second-team defenders. Mateer finished 26-of-43 for 244 yards, with two touchdown passes to Ivan Carreon — his first scores of the season — largely in garbage time.

With the transfer portal approaching, Oklahoma's quarterback room for 2027 includes true freshmen Whitt Newbauer and Bowe Bentley, who have combined for two passing attempts this season. Venables must decide whether to retain Arbuckle, who is in the second year of a three-year deal, and define an offensive identity that doesn't burden the defense weekly.

Analysts suggest that simply running the same scheme in 2027 won't work unless the Sooners land an elite quarterback or Arbuckle adopts an identity-first approach in the offseason.
