Denny Hamlin described his NASCAR Cup Series championship hopes as "unrealistic" following the playoff race at Martinsville Speedway. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver, who entered the Round of 8 event needing a win to advance to the Championship 4, finished outside the top positions and acknowledged the mathematical difficulty of overcoming the points deficit with only one race remaining in the round.
Hamlin, a three-time Daytona 500 winner, has yet to capture a Cup Series title despite 54 career victories. His comments came after the Xfinity 500 at the 0.526-mile Virginia short track, where playoff contenders battled for the final spots in the season finale at Phoenix Raceway.
The 43-year-old veteran will now focus on the season-ending race at Phoenix, where he can still race for a win but cannot contend for the championship. The Championship 4 field will be set after the next race, with the title decided in a winner-take-all format among the four finalists.
