Manchester City Suffer Back-to-Back Defeats as Brighton Win 1-0 at Etihad

Manchester City's perfect start under Enzo Maresca has come to a halt with consecutive Premier League defeats. After losing at Aston Villa last weekend, City fell 1-0 at home to Brighton on Saturday, ending a run of 23 top-flight home games with at least one goal. The result leaves City top on goal difference but vulnerable to being overtaken by Arsenal.

Defensive Errors Costly

City have conceded 10 goals in nine league matches this season, double Arsenal's tally. Individual mistakes have piled up: Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma were at fault at Villa Park, while Matheus Nunes was culpable against Brighton. Maresca insisted Donnarumma remains his undisputed first choice, but City have kept only one clean sheet in their last eight games across all competitions.

Midfield Muddle

The midfield was reshaped with £327m of summer signings following the departures of Bernardo Silva and Rodri. Maresca started all three new arrivals — Enzo Fernandez (£125m), Elliot Anderson (£116m) and Ayyoub Bouaddi (£86m) — leaving Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden on the bench. The manager cited Brighton's aggressive man-to-man approach as the reason, but the search for the best combination continues.

Attack Lacking Clinical Edge

Despite scoring 20 league goals this term, City have managed just one goal in their last two matches despite creating nine big chances. Erling Haaland, who had scored in seven straight Premier League games against Brighton, was starved of service, while Iliman Ndiaye missed the best opportunities. Maresca acknowledged the need to avoid "silly goals" and improve finishing ahead of Wednesday's Champions League trip to RB Leipzig.
