One person was killed and at least eight others injured in a mass shooting Saturday night outside Birmingham's Legion Field following the Magic City Classic college football game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. local time near Graymont Avenue West and Fourth Street West, where vendors and fans had gathered for postgame tailgating after Alabama A&M's 31-28 victory in front of a near sellout crowd of more than 70,000.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett described the shooting as "two senseless acts of violence" and praised officers who ran toward the gunfire. One person has been detained and transported to police headquarters, and multiple weapons were recovered at the scene. Police issued an order for people to leave the area around Legion Field shortly before 9 p.m.

The Birmingham Police Department is being assisted by the FBI and has asked anyone with video or information about the incident to come forward. Chief Pickett urged the community to address the broader issue of gun violence, noting it is a problem seen nationwide.
