Trey Kaufman-Renn Makes Kansas Debut in Win Over Fordham

Former Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn made his highly anticipated debut for No. 17 Kansas on Monday, contributing nine points, five rebounds and a block in a 95-65 victory over Fordham at Allen Fieldhouse. Kaufman-Renn, who was granted a preliminary injunction against the NCAA allowing him to play in the 2026-27 season, did not start the first half but entered the lineup at the beginning of the second half and logged 23 minutes.

Coach Bill Self on Kaufman-Renn's impact

"You guys will think I'm full of it, which I'm sure that many of you actually do totally 100% believe, but the guy came here totally cold," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "He was in bad shape and all that stuff. So I did want to evaluate him here on that. And in the meantime, we did check some boxes, just as we would with any transfer. But it is a difference. You guys could tell he's kind of a connector. Everybody's just going to be better with him on the floor."

Unprecedented eligibility case

Kaufman-Renn spent five seasons at Purdue but redshirted his freshman year (2021-22) after a knee injury requiring surgery, meaning he played only four seasons of college basketball. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility, a situation distinct from the typical five-for-five cases currently being litigated. The NCAA's new age-based eligibility model would have exhausted his eligibility because he was on a roster for five seasons, despite playing in just four.

Kaufman-Renn was selected 59th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2026 NBA Draft. Seniors who have exhausted eligibility are automatically draft-eligible without declaring, a key distinction in ongoing conference disputes. He averaged 14.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists during the 2025-26 season at Purdue and would have been a preseason All-American candidate had his eligibility been certain.

Roster implications

Kansas added Kaufman-Renn after freshman guard Grant Mordini suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury, creating a roster spot despite the Jayhawks already being over the 15-man limit with returning players Tre White and Melvin Council Jr., who are seeking fifth years of eligibility. With Kaufman-Renn, White and Council, Kansas possesses a roster capable of competing at the top of the Big 12.
