Concacaf has announced a significant format change for the 2027 Gold Cup, altering the group stage structure while keeping the knockout phase intact. The tournament will run from June 17 to July 11, 2027, and will still feature 16 teams, but they will now be divided into two groups of eight instead of the previous four groups of four.
New Group Stage Format
Fifteen teams will qualify through the Gold Cup preliminary round and will be joined by guest nation Saudi Arabia. Each team will play four group matches against opponents determined by a ranking-band system and a predetermined fixture matrix, ensuring a balanced schedule. The top four teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, adding an extra match compared to the previous three-game group stage.
Knockout Stage Unchanged
The knockout rounds will follow the traditional single-elimination bracket. The quarterfinal matchups will pair the highest-finishing teams from one group against the lower-finishing teams from the other group, with no reseeding. Quarterfinals are scheduled for July 3 and 4, semifinals for July 7 and 8, and the final on July 11.
Key Dates
The Gold Cup draw will take place on April 8, 2027. Concacaf president and FIFA vice president Victor Montagliani said the new format aims to create more exciting and competitive matchups earlier in the tournament, with every match mattering for a place in the knockout rounds.
