A former PSV Eindhoven winger has sparked outrage among Ajax supporters by claiming that Ruud Gullit was a greater player than Johan Cruyff. The controversial statement, reported by Roundtable Sports, has ignited debate across Dutch football circles.
The unnamed former PSV player asserted that Gullit surpassed Cruyff in greatness, a claim that directly challenges the widely held reverence for Cruyff as an icon of Ajax and Dutch football. Ajax fans, who consider Cruyff a legendary figure, reacted with anger and disbelief on social media.
Ruud Gullit and Johan Cruyff are both celebrated as among the greatest Dutch footballers of all time. Cruyff, a three-time Ballon d'Or winner, led Ajax to three consecutive European Cups in the early 1970s and later revolutionized the game as a coach. Gullit, a versatile attacker, captained the Netherlands to Euro 1988 glory and won the Ballon d'Or in 1987.
The debate highlights the enduring passion and rivalry between supporters of the two Amsterdam clubs, with Cruyff synonymous with Ajax and Gullit having played for PSV earlier in his career before moving to AC Milan.
