North Carolina's GM Search Enters Critical Phase as Bill Belichick Shapes Program's Future

North Carolina suspended general manager Michael Lombardi on July 27 amid an HR investigation. Lombardi, who was handpicked by head coach Bill Belichick, officially resigned in early September. Since then, Belichick has effectively managed the GM responsibilities himself, according to sources familiar with the program's structure.

The Tar Heels sit at 4-3 with two narrow losses, making a bowl appearance likely but not guaranteed. The program has hovered around .500 since 2000 (165-167 overall). UNC's 2027 recruiting class currently holds 16 commitments, a typical number at this stage. A new general manager will be tasked with navigating the transfer portal, which opens in January, and retaining the current roster.

Former Michigan GM Sean Magee is consulting with the football program through his firm TurnkeyZRG, which is leading the search for a permanent GM. That hire is not expected before the end of the regular season, per a source with knowledge of the process.

UNC may adopt a model where the GM reports to both athletic director Steve Newmark and Belichick, a shift from Lombardi's direct reporting line to Belichick. This structure mirrors a growing trend of professionalization in college football, with programs such as Florida, Oklahoma, Stanford, and California employing empowered general managers.

Belichick's contract guarantees at least $20 million in roster spending. The lack of a salary cap and wide variations in roster valuations across programs add complexity to the GM role. NFL personnel executives are increasingly pursuing college positions for higher compensation; Lombardi earned a nation-leading $1.5 million in base pay. University politics and the priority of men's basketball — new coach Mike Malone's roster is also near the $20 million mark — further influence the football operation.

The profile of the eventual hire will signal the program's short-term direction, especially as Belichick's contract is no longer guaranteed after the 2027 season. A GM not reporting solely to Belichick could indicate a structure designed to outlast his tenure. UNC faces Miami on Saturday, and the offseason roster management will be one of college football's most intriguing personnel storylines.
