On Saturday, Christian Mbilli will defend his WBC super middleweight championship against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in what represents the biggest opportunity of his career. Mbilli, undefeated as a professional, was elevated from interim to full champion after Terence Crawford retired following his victory over Alvarez in September 2025. Mbilli won the interim belt with a first-round knockout of Maciej Sulecki in June 2025 and fought to a split draw against Lester Martinez in his last bout.
Strengths
Mbilli is a high-pressure bruiser with muscular strength that allows him to bully opponents. Of his 29 career victories, 24 have come by knockout. He excels at trapping opponents against the ropes, delivering thudding right hands to the head and damaging left hooks to the body. His body-shot power was evident when he stopped Mark Heffron in just 40 seconds. Mbilli also thrives in rough, uncomfortable exchanges.
Weaknesses
Mbilli's high-output style — averaging 78 punches per round with 58 power shots over his last five fights, twice the division average — can lead to fatigue as fights progress. His heavy musculature adds stress, and he leaves himself open to counters when pursuing big punches. Those vulnerabilities were exposed in his draw with Martinez and against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, who landed significant counters even while injured.
Path to Victory
Oddsmakers list Mbilli as a +250 underdog. Alvarez has gone eight fights without a stoppage, raising questions about his power at age 34. Mbilli's size and pressure could force Alvarez into a brawl, neutralizing the Mexican star's technical edge. As Crawford noted, Mbilli's style is "tailor-made for Canelo," suggesting his best chance is to turn the fight into a dogfight by letting his hands go and roughing Alvarez up.
