Ernie Johnson announced on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, that the current season will be his last as host of "Inside the NBA." The 2026-27 campaign marks Johnson's 37th year leading the popular pre- and post-game show, which debuted in 1989 and features Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kenny Smith.

"This will be my last season," Johnson said. "Totally my decision. It's just time. It's been an honor to share so many nights, decades actually, with my brothers."

Johnson, 70, clarified that he is not retiring from broadcasting entirely. He will continue to work on TNT and CBS Sports' March Madness coverage and has launched a new production company, 32 Bowties, focused on feel-good sports stories. "Just to be clear, I'm not retiring," Johnson said. "Just cutting back. I'll still do March Madness and other projects for TNT and CBS."

Charles Barkley, a longtime co-host, recently stated on "The Bill Simmons Podcast" that he would also depart after this season unless Johnson reverses his decision. "Me and Ernie are a package deal," Barkley said. "If he says he's done, I'm gone."
