Britain's Harriet Dart captured her maiden WTA Tour singles title on Sunday, defeating Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Guangzhou Open final. The 30-year-old, ranked 115th in the world, came through qualifying to win the WTA 250 event, marking a remarkable turnaround after spending much of the past two seasons outside the top 100.
Dart was overcome with emotion after the nearly two-and-a-half-hour match, describing the week as "wild" and "incredible." She twice lost a lead in the deciding set before breaking for a 4-3 advantage and eventually converting her third championship point with a service winner. The victory will lift Dart back into the world's top 100, securing direct entry into the Australian Open main draw in January.
The triumph capped a week defined by resilience: Dart won four of her seven matches after dropping the first set. Her resurgence has been fueled by a partnership with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, with Dart posting a 19-5 record on hard courts since Wimbledon and a career-best 23-34 overall record this season.
Tagger, 18 and ranked 53rd, reached her first WTA final after upsetting seven-time major champion Venus Williams earlier in the tournament. The French Open junior champion pushed Dart to the limit, twice erasing deficits in the final set before falling short.
