Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will continue as club captain, describing the Portuguese midfielder as "fully committed" to the team. Carrick dropped Fernandes to the bench for Sunday's 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth after the player questioned tactics following a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como. The pair held clear-the-air talks at the Carrington training ground on Tuesday.
Carrick stated there is "no decision to be made" over the captaincy, adding: "He's the one that's led the team so well for many a game and many a year, and he'll continue to do that." The defeat left Carrick's own future uncertain, but he will remain in charge for Saturday's trip to Chelsea. United have now gone eight games without a win — their worst run since 2015-16 — and face a crucial period with a Champions League match against Roma and a Premier League fixture against Aston Villa on 8 November before the international break.
Carrick insisted he does not need assurances from the club hierarchy, which includes the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. "I don't need any assurances from anyone," he said. "I totally get the position. I understand the job. I understand the responsibilities."
