Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital and is reported to be doing well after collapsing at the club's training ground last Friday. The 40-year-old was taken ill while watching the second team train and was diagnosed with meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the protective membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

"Given the circumstances, he's doing well," said Max Eberl, Bayern's board member for sports, speaking to German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday. "He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us."

No timeline has been set for Kompany's return to the dugout. The club indicated on Saturday that his absence would be a matter of "weeks, not days." In the meantime, English assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge and oversaw a 3-1 victory at Freiburg on Sunday.

Kompany had been nursing a virus in the days leading up to the collapse and missed several training sessions. He also missed a pre-match news conference before Bayern's Champions League match against Arsenal last Tuesday but was present on the touchline for the game on Wednesday.

Eberl added that Kompany will now rest and take medication, expressing confidence that the Belgian will be back operating at full capacity soon. Bayern, currently leading the Bundesliga, face title rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
