Arsenal's 16-year-old midfielder Max Dowman will miss three matches after his appeal against a straight red card was rejected by the Football Association.
Dowman was dismissed in the 85th minute of Tuesday's Carabao Cup tie at Fleetwood Town after making contact with Fleetwood's Harrison Neal following a heavy challenge. The match ended 1-1, with Fleetwood winning 5-3 on penalties.
The dismissal was Dowman's second red card this month, having also been sent off while playing for England Under-19s. Arsenal appealed the decision on Wednesday, but the appeal was turned down.
Manager Mikel Arteta reacted angrily on the touchline, giving Dowman a scathing look and appearing to make a critical comment. After the game, Arteta said: "When we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to respect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate. It was very clear."
The red card was for violent conduct, defined as using or attempting to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, regardless of contact.
Arsenal are already short on wing options with Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis and Noni Madueke sidelined by injury. The Gunners return to Premier League action away to Liverpool on Sunday.
