Power Four Conference Championship Scenarios: SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC Paths Analyzed

With conference championship weekend approaching, the race for automatic College Football Playoff berths remains wide open across the Power Four leagues. Coaches have questioned the value of an extra game, but for now the winners secure a spot in the 12-team bracket. Here is a breakdown of the most plausible scenarios in each conference based on current standings and tiebreaker rules.

SEC Championship scenarios

Nine teams remain in the SEC title-game conversation, the most this late in a season. Georgia and Kentucky are in the strongest position. If all favorites win out, Georgia would finish 8-1 in conference play while Kentucky and LSU would tie at 7-2, with Kentucky advancing via head-to-head victory. Other scenarios include a three-way tie at 7-2 among Florida, LSU, and Georgia (Florida and LSU would advance), or Georgia facing Alabama, Texas, or Kentucky depending on outcomes of key games such as Alabama vs. LSU, Texas vs. Kentucky, and the Iron Bowl on November 28. Georgia essentially needs a 3-1 finish over its final four SEC games, including a win over Ole Miss, to guarantee a spot.

Big Ten Championship scenarios

UCLA and Ohio State are the only unbeaten teams in conference play. If both win out, they meet in Indianapolis, with Ohio State holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over Indiana and Northwestern. A loss by either opens the door for Indiana, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Minnesota. Indiana hosts Minnesota this weekend in a likely elimination game, while Northwestern faces Ohio State and Minnesota on consecutive road weeks. Analytics give UCLA a 71% chance to reach the championship, Ohio State 54%, Indiana 34%, and Wisconsin 13%.

Big 12 Championship scenarios

Last week's upsets — UCF over BYU and Texas Tech at Cincinnati — have muddied a race that once seemed clear. Unbeaten Utah leads the one-loss group of BYU, Texas Tech, Arizona, and Oklahoma State. Utah faces Cincinnati this weekend before a November 7 showdown with BYU. Texas Tech could be eliminated with a loss to Arizona, who have won five straight. Oklahoma State could reach the title game if they win out (including over Texas Tech on November 14) and BYU loses to Utah, giving the Cowboys a common-opponent edge over UCF.

ACC Championship scenarios

Miami controls the conference at 9-0 projected in league play. The main competition for the second spot in Charlotte is Wake Forest vs. SMU on November 14, both 4-1 in conference play. SMU's game against Notre Dame is non-conference and does not affect ACC standings. Six other teams have two conference losses but lack direct paths to the title game.
