Everton manager David Moyes confirmed that winger Jack Grealish was omitted from the side’s 3‑1 Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle United due to a breach of club discipline. The club did not disclose details, but the decision is understood to stem from an unauthorised absence from training on Monday.
Moyes said the decision was made by the club and he supported it, adding that he would not provide further details. Grealish, 31, is on a season‑long loan from Manchester City, where he is in the final year of a reported £300,000‑a‑week contract. He returned to Everton before the transfer window closed and has made five Premier League appearances plus one EFL Cup appearance this season.
The England international, who has 39 caps and four goals, missed Saturday’s 2‑0 loss at Arsenal with illness and was reported to have missed training without permission. He has since returned to training at Finch Farm and is expected to be fined.
Everton progressed to the quarter‑finals of the EFL Cup, where they will face League Two side Fleetwood Town. Moyes praised the squad for not letting Grealish’s absence distract them, emphasizing the club’s values on and off the pitch.
