College Football 2026: 10 Pivotal Games Remaining in Playoff Race
World Sports · 08:33:20 - Saturday, 31 October 2026

As the 2026 college football season enters its final month, the College Football Playoff selection committee prepares to release its first rankings next Tuesday. With conference championship paths still unsettled across the SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12, several upcoming matchups carry massive implications for the 12-team playoff bracket.

Half of the most important remaining games for Power Four programs in the top 25 fall on Nov. 7, including three top-15 SEC matchups. The BYU-Utah "Holy War" headlines that Saturday, with the unbeaten Utes able to punch their CFP ticket and the Cougars fighting for an at-large berth. Also on Nov. 7, Alabama visits LSU in a game that could eliminate the loser from playoff contention, while Miami travels to Notre Dame in a matchup bordering on must-win for the Fighting Irish after their loss to BYU. Kentucky visits Tennessee with the Wildcats chasing their first CFP appearance, and Georgia faces Ole Miss in a game that could decide the Rebels' playoff hopes.

Other critical dates include the Florida-Georgia rivalry in Atlanta on Oct. 31, which could reshuffle SEC standings, and Ohio State's trip to USC the same night, a game that could reshape the Big Ten title picture. Texas visits LSU on Nov. 14, offering the Tigers a chance to build a quality win resume. The USC-UCLA rivalry on Nov. 28 at the Rose Bowl may carry playoff weight for both Los Angeles programs. Finally, Oregon State hosts Boise State on Nov. 14 in a game that could influence the Group of Six's playoff bid, though New Mexico remains a factor.
