The New York City Marathon marks its 50th anniversary this year, having grown from a modest field of 2,000 runners in its early editions to an expected 60,000 participants across the five boroughs.
The race, which first took place in 1970, saw Bill Rodgers of Melrose, Massachusetts, claim victory in 1976. More recently, Kenya's Benson Kipruto edged out compatriot Alexander Mutiso to win the men's elite division on November 2, 2025, while Hellen Obiri captured the women's title on the same day.
Iconic moments include the mass start on the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge and the finish in Central Park, images that have become synonymous with the event's global appeal.
As the marathon approaches its 50th running, organizers reflect on its evolution from a local race to one of the world's premier marathons.
