Rusev has denied a report that WWE plans to place him in a stable with Ethan Page and Big Cass, telling TMZ’s Inside the Ring that he has not been informed of any such plan and is unsure he would accept it.
“It’s very internet booking. We have one, two, three bad guys, let’s put them together. I have not heard anything about this, but also, I don’t know if I’m okay with that either,” Rusev said. He added that Page moved on to Big Cass during his absence due to injury and illness, saying, “F you, bro. You never called me, checked on me. You’re just gonna go and find yourself a big guy? Good for you. I don’t wanna be associated with that.”
Before his hiatus, Rusev had been teaming with Page on Raw and competed in the number one contender’s gauntlet for the Intercontinental Championship in July. With the faction idea pushed back, here are four other directions WWE could take with Rusev upon his return.
Feud With Ethan Page
Rusev’s real-life frustration with Page’s new alliance could fuel a personal rivalry, turning Rusev babyface and capitalizing on his popularity from the “Rusev Day” era in 2017–2018.
Chase the Intercontinental Championship
Chad Gable has held the Intercontinental Championship since SummerSlam in August. Rusev participated in the gauntlet that determined Gable’s title shot but has not received a singles opportunity. A program would contrast Gable’s technical style with Rusev’s power.
Move to SmackDown for a United States Title Run
Rusev is a former three-time United States Champion. The title is currently held by Trick Williams on SmackDown. A brand switch would give Rusev fresh opponents and a clear midcard goal.
Big-Man Program With Oba Femi
Oba Femi, a rising star on Raw, is reportedly headed toward a match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 43. A series with Rusev would provide Femi a credible heavyweight opponent and deliver hard-hitting matches.
