Chicago Cubs catcher Carson Kelly has declined his player option for the 2027 season, making him a free agent this offseason, according to a report Saturday by Matt Cunningham.
The 32-year-old backstop, who wore number 15 for the Cubs, appeared in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on May 27, 2026, as shown in recent team photography. Kelly's decision to test the open market comes after spending part of the 2026 season with Chicago.
Terms of the declined option were not disclosed. Kelly will now be available to sign with any Major League club when the free-agent period opens.
