Former U.S. women's national team star Megan Rapinoe has expressed strong support for transgender athletes competing in elite sports. The OL Reign forward, photographed warming up before the 2023 NWSL Championship match against Gotham FC at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, said she "can't wait" for an "elite" transgender athlete to emerge.
"God forbid somebody be good at sports," Rapinoe remarked, challenging criticism of transgender inclusion in athletics. The two-time World Cup winner has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and gender equity throughout her career.
Rapinoe's comments come amid ongoing debate across multiple sports leagues regarding participation policies for transgender athletes. The NWSL, where Rapinoe plays for OL Reign, has maintained inclusive policies allowing transgender women to compete.
