English jockey Ryan Moore secured a historic sixth victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Saturday, guiding Benvenuto Cellini to a three-quarter-length triumph over compatriot James Doyle aboard Map Of Stars. The win extends Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien's record to eight victories in the £3.7 million ($5 million) feature race, with another O'Brien runner, Diamond Necklace, finishing third.
Moore's masterclass secures record
Moore, appointed MBE in June for services to racing and British sport, timed his challenge perfectly on the 3-1 favourite Benvenuto Cellini. The horse's dam, Newspaperofrecord, won the Breeders' Cup in 2018. O'Brien, who equalled his own record of 28 top-level victories in a calendar year, praised Moore's calm ride: "He was brilliant on him. He did it again, he had to come out and come round. Time after time he produces on the day."
Alvarado claims Classic victory
In the Breeders' Cup Classic, Venezuelan jockey Junior Alvarado produced what he called a "spectacular" win aboard Sovereignty for American trainer Bill Mott. The four-year-old, scratched from last year's race due to fever, swept aside a field that included Japan's Forever Young, who finished fifth. Alvarado credited the Godolphin team for keeping the horse in training: "We really wanted to run so bad the Classic last year. I'm just so glad the Godolphin team gave us a chance to keep him in training and get to do what he did today."
