Former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer, the Premier League's all-time leading goalscorer with 260 goals in 14 seasons, has spoken about the possibility of his record being broken. Erling Haaland has scored 120 Premier League goals in just over four seasons for Manchester City, and Shearer acknowledges that if the Norwegian stays in England he could surpass the tally. Harry Kane previously reached 213 goals before moving to Bayern Munich in 2023. "I'm sure it will be broken one day, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts," Shearer said, adding that a move for Haaland to a club like Real Madrid would help preserve his record.
In a wide-ranging interview, the 56-year-old recalled leaving Newcastle for Southampton at age 15, describing the emotional departure from his parents. He later won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers in 1992 before returning to his boyhood club Newcastle in 1996, where he scored 206 goals in 405 appearances across all competitions. Despite never winning another trophy, Shearer remains a beloved figure in the city, often attending matches incognito with a cap pulled low.
After retiring, Shearer served as interim Newcastle manager for the final eight games of the 2008-09 season, but the team was relegated. He later interviewed for and was offered the manager's job at Cardiff City, but withdrew after questioning his desire to return to management. Since then he has become a regular pundit on BBC's Match of the Day, co-commentates on England matches, and appears on The Rest Is Football podcast. Shearer noted the demanding schedule, with a typical matchday involving a 19- to 20-hour round trip from Newcastle to Salford.
