Oklahoma is expected to elevate Jason Witten to offensive coordinator following the firing of Ben Arbuckle, sources confirmed to Sooners Illustrated. Witten joined the Sooners staff as tight ends coach in 2026 after a distinguished playing career with the Dallas Cowboys.
A future Hall of Fame tight end, Witten was a four-time All-Pro and 11-time Pro Bowler. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2019. After his final NFL season in 2020, Witten moved into coaching, spending five years as head coach and offensive playcaller at Liberty Christian High School in Argyle, Texas.
During his tenure, Liberty Christian won the first two state championships in program history. Over the 2023-24 seasons, the Warriors posted a combined 26-1 record and averaged 50.9 points per game. Quarterback Quinn Murphy, now at Baylor, threw for 3,152 yards with 40 touchdowns and five interceptions under Witten's guidance.
Liberty Christian competes in TAPPS, the private school association in Texas. In Witten's final season, the team went 1-2 against public school competition, highlighting the significant jump from private high school playcaller to the SEC.
According to reports, offensive analyst Kevin Wilson, a former Sooners coordinator, will play a supporting role. Oklahoma has three remaining matchups against AP Top 25 opponents.
Witten had received overtures for NFL and college staff positions after his playing career but chose to coach his son, Cooper, at Liberty Christian. Cooper Witten is a five-star linebacker in the Class of 2027 and is committed to Oklahoma.
